We just start selling Biergartens (beer gardens) at the store today. They're locally made and hand crafted from reclaimed and recycled materials. Right now, we're carrying the 2' window sill design, but you can put them anywhere that gets some sun. They each hold five planters cut from 22 ounce craft beer bottles with hand sanded edges, as well as 22 craft beer caps inlayed in the base. They can be purchased without plants for $50, or for just $10 more they come with soil and plants - ready to spruce up your home, bar, or restaurant. Currently we have spider plants, as seen in the picture, but we'll have pothos and possibly some other options soon too.

The biergartens are available in any size from 6" (one bottle and six caps) to.. well as big as you want.

Coming soon, we'll be offering wine gardens - same idea, but with wine bottles and cork inlays.

Salad Days films in rock n rose

We just got done with filming a scene for an upcoming film called Salad Days in the store. For a couple of hours this afternoon, the store was transformed into a movie set, with about 20 cast and crew busy with lights, sound, wardrobe, make-up, and cameras. Everyone was really great, and it was a lot of fun to watch the shoot. Wardrobe loved our feather earrings from bird crap featherwear, and decided to use them for the shoot; where they were prominently featured in close-ups in the scene. We're really excited to see it all come together in the premiere!

For the second time, rock n' rose has been honored in the Willamette Week's annual Best of Portland issue! We first won for "best place to shop" and "best kept secret" in what they called the "inseam district" in 2008. In 2009, the categories changed, and the closest award we could qualify for was "Best Place to Shop"... in the whole city. We didn't mind losing to Portland landmark Powell's Books; how could we compete with the world's largest independent book store? This year the Willamette Week changed the categories once again and asked readers what the "best little shop" in Portland was. That's a LOT of competition, and we were honored to receive a runner up designation in the 2010 edition that's on news stands right now. Congratulations Presents of Mind for winning this years readers choice award, as well as Naked Sheep Knit Shop, Local35, and Cupcake Jones who we shared the runners-up designation with.

Angela Dawn is a west coast based creative machine. Pulling from the city she lives, to put forth an overwhelming sense of life, vivid colour, form, and a touch of magic into every shoot. Pushing photo barriers, fashion photography and fine art are the main focus in her present work.

We are proud to announce that as of this week we will be carrying local jewelry designer Betsy and Iya's amazing and unique necklaces and earrings. Here is what PDX Magazine had to say about the talented little lady:

What betsy & iya Is
Unapologetically bold or slinky and sinuous, you’ll know it’s betsy & iya jewelry by the trademark earwires and clasps. The large, handformed, sterling silver loops add conspicuous bodaciousness to their functionality. Totemic talismans and semiprecious marvels make compelling focal points amid a menagerie of metals or within an asymmetrical system. Even the label’s name is a study in contrasts: Betsy Cross is the designer/owner; Iya is what Betsy called her sister before she could talk. While not directly involved with the business, “Iya”’s fashion sense guides Betsy in spirit.

Who Betsy Cross Is
The Roanoke, Virginia, native moved to Portland in 2006 with a Master’s degree in physical theatre and a fascination with ornamentation. By early 08, her jewelry business plans snowballed of their own accord. “I just couldn’t stop,” the 27-year-old says of the mounting purchases preceding her March ’08 launch. Betsy also loves sweating over a hot drill in her Northwest studio forging outsized trinkets. “They’re big, but cute, which is how I feel as a person. I’ve always been tall and kind of clunky, but I feel cute and sexy.”

Why We Like It
betsy & iya comes on strong without overpowering the wearer. The pieces inspire confidence but remain accessories. Customers often remark, “I wouldn’t have thought that would look right on me but when I try it on, it does.” Betsy will customize any piece for a buyer to accommodate taste, fit, or wording, and supports independent artists in her materials purchasing, including the locally-mined agates and fair-trade beetle wings. She strings pearls and casts metal: she can’t be stopped.
